Should the minimum education requirement for Nurses be a bachelor’s degree?

Here’s a post I read on RN Network about minimum requirements for nurses to have a bachelor’s degree. I agree that this is a very controversial subject, and has been discussed on a few numerous occasions. Probably to nauseam.  As a baccalaureate prepared RN, I do not see myself as “smarter” or “better” than an associate’s prepared RN (just want to clear the air). Not looking to start a mini war here, but I realize that I’m making the decision to post this.

I also agree that we nurses do need to have some type of standardized (minimum) requirement for our education. This isn’t about an “us against them” situation. It’s about becoming one united voice, and creating a better foundation for nurses to springboard into that next level of our education, our careers, and elevate our position to better help our patients. There seems to be this perpetual fight for us to gain a certain level of respect, credibility, and appreciation from our colleagues and the public about us as a profession. I LOVE BEING A NURSE, and I want us all as one united voice to raise our professional standards so that we can continue to elevate our thinking as a whole.

Update: Thanks Jennifer Olin BSN, RN for posting this on RN Network
